“Art That Moves Us Forward”

About Adelante Arts Camp:

Adelante Arts Camp was inspired by the Latino Mural Project which TAP (Tuscarawas Arts Partnership) and the Tuscarawas County Public Library System organized in the Summer of 2021. To share some positivity and creatively express the Latino culture in Tuscarawas County, the Latino Mural Project was formed to invite local Latino students in grades 6th - 12th to collaborate on a mural in Downtown New Philadelphia called “Brighter Together.” The project consisted of local professional artists who guided the students to learn about and design a mural that marries the colors, patterns, and textures of their family’s cortes (skirt) prints, and the quilting patterns that is seen in parts of Tuscarawas County and Amish country. The classwork, design, painting, and installation of the mural resulted in a positive light in the community and experience for our Latino students.

Based on what we learned from the project, this inspired TAP and the Tuscarawas County Public Library System to create a summer arts camp program for the local Latino and Hispanic 6th - 12th grade students, and provide a variety of artistic and cultural forms to celebrate the Latino and Hispanic culture in Tuscarawas County. Adelante Arts Camp was born with a focus on “art that moves us forward.” Adelante Arts Camp is an opportunity for the local Latino and Hispanic students in Tuscarawas County to explore and experience new art forms each year with an influence on their cultural and creative identities.

The goal of Adelante Arts Camp is to provide an environment for local Latino students to creatively express themselves, share their stories, and explore new art forms that will celebrate their culture and individuality.

Adelante Arts Camp is a summer arts program that tells the stories of 6th - 12th grade Maya-Kiche, Maya-Ixil, Latino, and Hispanic students through a variety of artistic and cultural forms to celebrate their community and culture in Tuscarawas County. Local students meet twice a week to learn and hone in on new knowledge and techniques from professional creatives to enhance their artistic experiences and gain confidence in their culture and identity.
